It is crazy that this disease is so potent that it was able to kill 95% of a starfish population in an area.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8997724252948267275.post-91608217550191602992014-04-24T16:08:59.651-04:002014-04-24T16:08:59.651-04:00I have not heard of this issue yet, so this is sur...I have not heard of this issue yet, so this is surprising to me. I find it interesting that in some ecosystems, like coral reefs, sea stars can be seen as a threat to biodiversity yet now we are trying to save them. It was mentioned today that in an attempt to save a certain ecosystem from sea star takeover, scientists went out and injected the overpopulated sea stars with cyanide to purposefully kill them. It goes to show the diverse roles a group of species can have in different environments.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8997724252948267275.post-29358933388354076532014-04-24T11:18:41.140-04:002014-04-24T11:18:41.140-04:00Scott and Alison, when I was reading up on this, I...Scott and Alison, when I was reading up on this, I couldn't really find any journal articles that gave more of an idea of what is going on. The blog articles I referenced only talked about the UC Santa Cruz studies. I think that this is occurring too quickly for them to find out what's really happening :(Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8997724252948267275.post-20005100995417337932014-04-24T00:21:57.371-04:002014-04-24T00:21:57.371-04:00It seems as though so many of the stories about th...It seems as though so many of the stories about the ocean are depressing, it is such a shame. Very interesting none the less. The entire time reading this I kept thinking about how this effect on Pisaster could effect the larger system seeing as it is as you said the "keystone species". I think you said it well in that the effects could be profound. Hopefully, they won't be though!Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8997724252948267275.post-86276751061859146122014-04-23T22:22:58.357-04:002014-04-23T22:22:58.357-04:00It is amazing to me that the rapid waste from the ...It is amazing to me that the rapid waste from the lesions can kill them in 2 days. That seems very fast! It is also sad that it is spreading quickly to other species. It seems to be spreading more quickly than other diseases since it has already had an impact on about 12 species.
